I'm a bit of a purist myself and personally love seeing old cars with the original manufacturers rims. Rally II's on a Firebird, Magnum 500's on a 68 Mustang, Rally wheels on a Corvette etc. That's not to say that other rims don't look good too and in some cases (Dodge)are a big improvement.
I'm also a firm believer that you paid for it so do what you like. IMO This hobby is about injecting your own personality into your project and being proud of what you have accomplished.
