Kelly -- I may have missed this from earlier posts, but what kind of shifter assembly are you using now? If you have a standard '68-'69 four-speed console and a Hurst assembly, things should work without having to do anything to the console cup. From what I've read, the only cup modifications come into play when you have a '67 console because it's different from the others.

I have a '68 that had the replacement Hurst Competition Plus 4-speed shifter with a flat stick handle. Factory was a round bar stick. The only thing you have to figure out is how stock do you want to be? The factory-correct shifter assembly uses the round bar 5325 stick, which attaches to the assembly by way of a pressure/shim system. The Competition Plus flat stick is held in place with two bolts. I found a correct round bar shifter for around $100 (rechromed ones are on eBay for around $200), and it already had been drilled to fit the two-bolt system. A correct complete shim assembly isn't cheap, but if you can find a stick that's either already been drilled for the two holes, or if you find one that hasn't that you want to drill, either will work. I haven't had any console cup issues; the stick moves with ease.

Hope this helps.
