One thing to keep in mind with the Hood Tach Placement is that these
were done on the line and sometimes at the dealer, so the placement
is not an exact measurement. Yes, the 67's tall Tachs weer slightly
different in mounting holes from the 68's etc.

Aftermarket tachs: One thing I had considered at one point in order
to add some extra gauges, I was planning on getting a housing for
the Mustang Rally Pack that mounts to the steering column and had a
pod on each side of the column that I planned on putting custom gauges
in. I was going to get one for my wife's 66 Mustang so I could test
fit it on the Firebird column and for aftermarket gauges... it would
be a clean custom install that would almost look like a factory piece.

On the extra hood springs inside the stock ones, That was Bjorn (Volvo
of course) I've also done that for good measure and they work great.

I recall someone said they put springs from a different car inside
the OEM springs. I think it was springs from a volvo, but I'm not
sure now. This gave a bit more support to balance the weight of
the hood. I would try that before removing the original springs.
It could take a while to get all the settings correct on aftermarket
springs that bring the hood back into correct alighment.
