First Generation Firebird-L Mailing List

Guys,
I have a business and we sell officially licensed floormats with GM logos
on them like Pontiac, Firebird, etc. We are not the manufacturer of
these
mats. This past year, I had someone come to me that wanted a GM logo for
an older Buick that we did not have. Anyway, he wrote GM and they
granted
him a one time use for free since it was a hobbyist thing. He presented
us
with the official form signed off by GM. I don't have the details
anymore,
but if you are interested in doing this, start by contacting GM and see
if
they will grant you the rites to use the logo.
Regards,
Joe

Copyright law is available at
http://www.copyright.gov/title17/92chap3.html#303
The copyright is likely to be in force today since it can be renewed for
a
further term of 67 years.
This might also be considered a trademark. I haven't searched for info on
that.
Some corporations will pursue copyright infringement aggressively,
especially logos. GM could take legal action if they chose to and they
would
win. If they took legal action, it wouldn't be about the money, it would
be
about demonstrating property rights. If a few hundred tee shirts were
made,
damages probably wouldn't amount to much. But the defense could prove
very expensive for the defendant.
Why not contact GM and ask for permission? Without written permission, I
wouldn't risk my own wealth making a few tee shirts.
