CHAR value types are for fixed length data fields. If you enter 2 characters in a 10 character field, the other 8 characters are typically field with spaces (depends on implementation). All though most developers trim results of CHAR fields, there are some applications that might require the spaces to be included (register fields come to mind). I think that leaving the field padded with spaces is the correct thing to do.
