Sorry Alan.

The problem got solved automatically when I switched of Terminal 
Services in 2003. I think the problem seems to be somewhere here because 
they had three thin clients (which they had purchased recently for some 
RnD) which were booting from the server directly and the clients base OS 
is some customized version of Linux.

I first disconnected all thin clients, disabled the terminal services 
and rebooted the server and everything started running well just like that!
