My firebird installation is working fine now.  In my initial search for a 
newer .NET provider dll, I had foolishly missed the newest one released on 
May 22, 2009.  After replacing my older dll with this one, the problems went 
away.  My apologies for wasting bandwidth on such a simple problem.
