I have run in a similar problem in the past were connection dialog disappears once I type anything in any field. I was using 32 bit versions of (both VS2008SP1 and VS2010B2), Windows 7 and Firebird 2.5 RC1. The fact that you have a Firebird datasource in VS seems to suggest that you got the registry settings correctly. My problem was with the machine.config, I later discovered that i was adding the Firebird entries after the closing </DbProviderFactories> node beacuse I did not see it due to long lines and the stupid editor I was using. Once I rectifyed that, everything worked like a charm. It is a silly mistake to do but it happens. You probably have something wrong with machine.config as well.
