Because adapter.UpdateCommand stays null for the whole execution of my program! What seems to be happening is that FbDataAdapter.Update calls method OnRowUpdating, which in turn calls into RowUpdatingHandler, entering into DbCommandBuilder ... and generating the update command by some magic, which I am not sure to understand yet. Somehow, the command created in there seems to be recycled from one Update call to the next; it is probably deep in there that I should be able to tell DbCommandBuilder to use the new transaction instead.
