not sure to understand what you mean, but sharding it's a proven technologie that it's really unbeatable ! just try for exemple sphinx, select * from ... where ... order by xxx against 5 different host is 5 time faster than on a single host ! i test it's true !!
and it's a rule "scall horizontall you data not vertically" !
