Eg substring(x similar 'V#"[[:DIGIT:]]+#"%.pdf' escape '#') yields '12' but substring(x similar 'V[[:DIGIT:]]+#"%#".pdf' escape '#') yields '2 p234 The state of the nation' -- Mark Rotteveel
