When Firefox updates it tries to use the configuration state from previous versions. The vast majority of the time this works. Sometimes it does not. If you are unlucky, you need to create a new Firefox profile and migrate to it. Start by creating the new profile and seeing if Firebug installs. http://groups.google.com/group/firebug/web/faq-about-firebug There is also a problem on Vista around admin privileges, you'll need to look into Firefox support if that is your problem.
