I also had bad experiences running Firebug 1.2 in Firefox 2, so I went back to an earlier version of Firebug for now.
However, for a few days, I was running the same combination as you (FF2, Firebug 1.2, and Tab Mix Plus 0.3.6) and, although the frequency of crashes increased slightly, Firefox was not crashing on startup. So the combination of factors may be a little more complicated than that. When you run lots of extensions it seems almost impossible to figure out all the interactions.
