After some investigation, we've determined that the bug is in Firefox itself.
The error does not occur in Firefox 3.0.6 and this may be the easiest fix for the time-being for Firebug users. Alternatively, Jan's patch (1.3XJ.3.1dev.xpi) posted in issue 1565 will work with Firefox 3.0.7 but may have other unpredictable results, especially where the Firebug cache is concerned.
