Weren't you the one who was just saying you wanted Firebug off for
Gmail? You can not have "always active" and "off for Gmail". So I'll
assume you meant:

Firebug active and minimized for a site I want to debug (first time):
   Firebug Status Bar Icon click: ON
   Control-R Reload
   Firebug Status Bar Icon click: minimize.
   Firebug Status Bar Icon click: unminimize.
   etc.

If you have debugged the site before and you are not minimized:
   Firebug Status Bar Icon click: minimize.

If you have debugged the site before and you are minimized:
   well there you are, you are done.

All of this assumes you do *not* use Firebug statusbar icon context
meny "On for all page" or "Off for all pages".

You can also use the [_] minimize icon for for the minimize steps
above; or the Open Firebug key binding, F12 default.
