OK, I've narrowed it down to a conflict with the Split Browser extension. https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/4287
A bit unfortunate, as I use this one quite often especially when reading technical articles containing diagrams and screen shots. Anyway, it just means I need to disable it when doing Firebug debugging. It's not at all obvious why there should be a conflict though. I suspected Ad Block Plus as I've had issues with that before - and for a while it seemed like Greasemonkey was also a problem but that was a false alarm.
