(Vista Home, AVG 8.5, Fireox 3.5, Firebug 1.4)

I was getting the same "safeInstallOperation" error in my
extensions.log other people have been getting. I tried to disable the
AVG firefox extension, AVG itself, and my Carbonite backup program,
and it still won't work. I also tried deleting my extension.ini/rdf/
etc files, and creating a new Firefox profile too. Then I found this
thread:
http://forums.mozillazine.org/viewtopic.php?f=38&t=1179985&start=0

Simply copying the .xpi files into [email protected]
didn't work either! Firefox (3.5) recognized Firebug finally when I
did this, but insisted it needed to "restart" to activate it. Needless
to say it still said that after multiple restarts.

I noticed an empty folder in the root Program Files/Mozilla Firefox
folder: {ec8030f7-c20a-464f-9b0e-13a3a9e97384}. That's the same target
application/id thing I saw when poking around in the install.rdf file
from the .xpi. So I copied all of the files from the .xpi into there
as well.

And voila! The Firebug 1.4 runs again.
