Since this feature works for us and many other people, my guess is
that you have some problem in your configuration. To test this,
install Firebug in a new Firefox profile:

If you want Firebug on, open it. Otherwise it is off by default.
If you have opened Firebug and don't want it open, Push the Off button
upper right corner.
