I have just tested a17 with Firefox 3.0.11 and 3.5.1pre and the test case works on my machine (I see the XHR in Firebug's Console panel). Are there any errors in Firefox->Tools->Errors Console? Or could you please use FBTrace console (Firebug->Open Firebug Tracing), check ERRORS, NET and SPY options, execute the test case and see what is in the log? Perhaps any suspicious messages, errors?
