I think Luke said most of what I would care to say in response to this. However, I thought two things were pretty important to bring up here.
1) I realize that John and the others are volunteer developers on Firebug and I think they do a fine job. John puts up with a lot of crap on here, and I could hardly blame him if it ticked him off and he made terse responses all the time, but he keeps cool-headed and tries to give constructive responses anyway. I really respect that from him. However, I think the fact that the Firebug developers are volunteers just means they should lean on community feedback even more, particularly when attempting to drastically overhaul core features. If they don't want to do that, that's fine, but then they should expect to deal with people who don't like the drastic overhaul and didn't feel like they had any say whatsoever in what is, largely, a community tool. 2) If I wanted to use a better "debugger", I'd switch to Safari. WebKit at least has a sensible method of operation and the icons make sense. I use Firebug because I prefer it over others, but that doesn't mean that Firebug couldn't take a note from some of them.
