Then something is broken on your Firefox configuration.

After you push minimize, the Firebug UI hides and the Firebug status
bar icon will be orange (assuming you have enabled at least on of
Console/Script/Net panel). Firebug remains active on the page and
records console, net, and script activity.

After you push the power button, the Firebug UI hides and the Firebug
status bar icon will be gray. Firebug is not active on that page.

If this does not happen, then you probably have something broken in
your Firefox configuration; you can try a new Firefox profile.

Do you have Console/Net/Script panels enabled?

I urge you to unselect On for all pages until you have more experience
with 1.4.

Your input on Firebug 1.5 is welcome, its is currently at 1.5a19.

And I really think your configuration is messed up so you getting a
mixture of unfamiliar behavior and buggy results.
