Created a new profile, installed firebug (on mac - Mozilla/5.0 (Macintosh; U; Intel Mac OS X 10.5; en-US; rv:1.9.1.1) Gecko/20090715 Firefox/3.5.1 - FWIW), same results. After a 30 minutes, and about 15 reloads, the physical memory usage climbed from 94MB to 566MB. After not touching it for 15 minutes, physical memory was at 554MB.
Unfortunately in this particular case I cannot give you access to the page, or the server side code the responds to the XHR's. Any reasonably large page should do the trick. I could try and whip something up, but it will be some time before I'd be able to get to it.
