I must say I'm very disappointed by this. I have been using Firebug for about a year now and have always found it very useful but, since it upgraded to 1.4.x I haven't been able to break at all -- not for red-spots, debugger statements or the pause (debug on next) button. My experience of the problem seems to be limited to http://localhost:8080 and file:/// URLs -- it did seem to break on a public website I tried.
I should not have to create an entirely new Firefox profile just to run Firebug -- I never had to before.
