Success!! Had reloaded firefox and I got a message to upgrade Adobe flash player as there were some instability issues. I did this and just wondering I tried installing firebug. This time it worked!
I have checked the extentions again and can see no difference from previously although below the Shockwave Flash 10.0.2.54 are the words Shockwave Flash 10.0 r2. I am not certain if the r2 was there previously so wonder if this was an incompatibility with Shockwave flash? Anyway it is working now so try updating Flash player.
