So the title of the post should read:

Firebug keeps on hanging Firefox.

A crash an entirely different event, it means the application
vanishes. The two events have completely different likely causes.

I don't know of any test case showing this effect, and we have
specific standard tests we run on continuing and reloading from
breakpoints before we release Firebug.

The most commonly reported cause for this effect is the use of
HTMLValidator.

If that is not your problem, then I have two suggestions:
 1) Try Firebug 1.5b3, http://getfirebug.com/releases,
 2) Install Firebug in a new Firefox profile, see 
http://getfirebug.com/wiki/index.php/FAQ
If you still have the problem, then we need a reproducible test case,
http://code.google.com/p/fbug/issues/list
