If you run this code with firebug disabled (in addons, not just
deactivated) the error will display in the error console.
If firebug is enabled, the error is not displayed and the code breaks
at 'not_there()'

function do_test(){
        xml_req('test_data.php')
}
function xml_req(url){
        var xml=new XMLHttpRequest()
        xml.onreadystatechange=function(){
                if(xml.readyState == 4){
                        document.body.style.background='#0f0'
                        not_there()        /* THIS SHOULD GENERATE A 'NOT
DEFINED' ERROR
BUT DOES NOT IF FIREBUG IS ENABLED */
                        document.body.style.background='#f00'
                }
        }
        xml.open("GET",url,true)
        xml.send(null)
}
