I had this same issue. Turned out to be a problem with fireQuery ver
0.3 plugin for firebug.  Once i disabled that everything started
working as expected.  This was also the case with several of my
coworkers working on windows machines.   There could be other plugins
that are interfering with firebug as well so you may have to go
through the list one by one and disable to see which one is causing
the problem.
