When you have the gmail tab selected is the Firebug icon gray? Gray is
inactive, orange is active.

This should not happen, but it has nothing to do with 'disable for
site'.

Firefox mixes up the error messages from all sites. I try to untangle
them. Sometimes this does not work.

To fix this I want to change Firefox to stop mixing up the error
messages in the first place.
