The three little red icons: minimize, open in new window and close firebug are not visible if firebug is not active, so none of these functions can be executed.
The windows minimize buttons is available and it minimizes the firebug window to the taskbar. This is complete different from firebugs minimize button that hides/closes the firebug window (but firebug remains active).
