Removing these file is not enough.  You have to also force Firefox to
re-build its component registry.

You can do this by deleting xpti.dat in your profile folder, by
installing a new extension. or by uninstalling an extension.

I suggest you simply install Firebug 1.6a8,

The install location has nothing to do with this problem.

Reinstalling does not affect profile contents. That is why
reinstalling does not fix these problems.

Firebug 1.6a8 works even if you have the bogus copies of inspector
laying around.
