What is the best way to go about debugging the following layout
problem?

Here's the situation: I am using a Joomla! template built by a third
party and I am trying to adapt it to my needs. There are three columns
on the page, left for a menu, center for content, and right for
another menu.

I shrunk the width of the center content column. However, while the
outer container shrunk to the proper size, something is causing the
contents of the inner "content" container to spill beyond that new,
smaller border. It is hidden, but it is still running outside of the
outer container that I modified.

My question then is really, what is the best general procedure for
going about debugging a layout issue such as this? I want to know what
is constraining the size of "something" in the center column.

I'm a novice at this so please excuse me if I left out any relevant
details.

Thanks in advance to anyone willing to help with this.
