If Firefox is already running, "firefox -p" will simply switch to the running instance. To bring up the Profile Manager, Firefox must not be running, or you must use the -no-remote option, which will let you start another instance while one already exists. If you do that, you *can't* use the same profile for the second instance - the first instance will lock it.
