I upgraded to Firebug 1.8.0b4 today to see if this solves anything. Unfortunately not, the Firebug version I found usable is Firebug 1.5.4 on Firefox 3.6.12.
I think the tests that the consecutive Firebug releases "all pass" are inadequate. Major issues exist in the releases... :-( However this is for free and there are hardly any alternatives.
