Thanks Honza, Well, I had unrelated system difficulties last night, resulting in several reboots. After getting that cleared up FireFox (which happens to be 5.0, btw), would start with a FireBug (1.8.0b6) section in the toolbar. It seemed completely non-functional, so I uninstalled it, and went back to 1.7.3. Somewhere in that mess the problem went away.
