By closing the Firebug Lite window I guess you mean clicking the toolbar 
button again, right?
Well all I can say is, that it's big brother 
Firebug<http://getfirebug.com/>does it this way in Firefox. So clicking the 
start button once activates 
Firebug for a page and opens its UI. Clicking the button again closes the 
UI, but keeps Firebug activated. The decision to let it work like so was 
taken before I joined the team and people are already used to it.
And so this behavior was transferred to Firebug Lite.
It's up to you to make a 
suggestion<http://code.google.com/p/fbug/issues/entry?template=User%20enhancement%20request>to
 change this for Firebug Lite. Though know, that work is currently 
focussed on Firebug instead of Firebug Lite due to a lack of manpower.
