I am using FF 8.0.1 + FB 1.8.4 on Win7 32bit and never saw that problem. Also afaik no other person ever mentioned that so far. Also it doesn't really sound like a Firebug specific issue to me.
In such cases we always ask the people to create a new Firefox profile and just install Firebug on it. I also suggest you simply follow the steps of our I found a Firebug bug!<http://getfirebug.com/wiki/index.php/I_found_a_Firebug_Bug%21>page, which describe some more steps besides that.
