At https://getfirebug.com/commandline/, I'm told that

"After you've found an HTML element using the Inspect tool, you often want
to use the command line to manipulate it. Firebug makes it easy; just use
the "$1" variable to reference the last element you inspected, or "$2" for
the one before that.

Likewise, you can use "$$1" and "$$2" to reference objects that are
selected in the DOM tab."

First, the inspect/reference sequence starts at $0, not $1. But more
important, $$1 seems not to work at all. I select and inspect numerous
objects in the DOM tab, and $$0, $$1, etc. all report a ReferenceError in
the console. What am I missing?

I'm using Firebug 1.9.2 on Firefox 13.0.1 on Snow Leopard.
