I see no one has responded to this problem. It is still happening in the latest version of Firebug (1.10.0).
Here is a small test case I wrote: http://nnjsda.org/admin/ajax-test-case.php If you put a breakpoint inside the function called when the AJAX call comes back, you can see what happens. This makes debugging ajax very difficult. I know this was not a problem over a year ago.
