Some small examples: Linux, Windows, and I guess also Mac OS menus for
example. Tree view items, list items etc. in the different OS's,
auto-completion lists in Eclipse and NetBeans - all work with Up/Down.

I don't understand you here.
Note that you can also turn off the display of the Completion List Popup
via the *Console* Panel
options<https://getfirebug.com/wiki/index.php/Console_Panel#Options_Menu>
.

Oops. My fault. The shortcut is Ctrl+Space to display the Completion List
Popup. Please follow the link. It avoids misunderstandings and long
descriptions here.

Well, I'm not that used to VIM. Though reading through the VIM
shortcuts<http://www.keyxl.com/aaa8263/290/VIM-keyboard-shortcuts.htm>I do not
see any shortcut like
<C-n>.
Anyway, maybe extensions like
Vimperator<https://addons.mozilla.org/firefox/addon/vimperator>or
Pentadactyl <https://addons.mozilla.org/firefox/addon/pentadactyl> do what
you want.

For me using Up/Down is faster than having to press two keys, but ok.

It does already, but not the shortcuts for any popups.
