This problem is caused by the debugger API Firebug uses. We're working hard on switching to a new debugger API<http://code.google.com/p/fbug/issues/detail?id=5421>, which should solve problems like this. There's also a related report at Mozilla<https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=815603>to improve the performance of the old debugging API. In the meantime you can disable the Script panel when you don't need it. This should make opening Firebug and tab switching much faster.
