I suggest you first try out if it's working in a new Firefox profile <https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/profile-manager-create-and-remove-firefox-profiles>. If it's working there, and it's really not related to any add-ons, as you say, then it's most probably some preference in your profile.
You may see some error(s) reported within Firebug's *Console* panel <https://getfirebug.com/wiki/index.php/Console_Panel> giving a hint to the problem.
