I understand that you can't develop the Firebug anymore,
I'm none of the firebug developers and I pity the discontinuation as well.
but unfortunately
many extensions on the Firefox Developer Edition are not available.
Which extensions are you talking about? New FirePHP is in the making:

Until it is ready you can use my ChromePHP modification, which acts as a
drop-in replacement for the FirePHP server module:

So now I have the problem that I have to switch between two FFs. This is
not practical.
No it's not. But the developer tools are worth to get used to. The
developers are aware of the gaps to firebug. If you're missing
something, please have a look whether it is already listed as blocker ->
<https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/showdependencytree.cgi?id=991806&hide_resolved=1>
of bug 991806 <https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=991806>. If
not, please file a new bug and mark it as blocker of that one.
