I like Debian Linux for this reason. The base2_0.tgz contains the
minimal Linux needed to bootstrap the rest of Debian from the ftp
site. It also happens to have everything you need, except
application proxies, to make a firewall system (Why do you need
perl? Send syslog to another host and do your log scanning there
:). Basic Debian takes up less than 20Mb of disk space.
