hi,
FWIW *NIX allows @ the <<END of the day more granularity to scrutinize
connections. Since managing connections and controlling data transmissions
is what a firewall does it is very important that it have no encumberances.
I have found that nt is fine for a small nt centric shop that has far less
to lose than say a fortune 500 company but as the real cost of a security
breech looms it is important that you have the most effective tools at
your disposal. *NIX is not so limiting as nt and does not require as many
unknowns as the source easily had as well as the tools to scrutinize are
more granular. You do not have to take for granted for all the inadequancies
that nt appends with this vendor and that vendor which is not easily analysed.
The slight extra dollars you spend for better hardware if you go with say a
Sun Ultra box is saved in life expectancy of the hardware under heavy load.
At the end of the day you get what you pay for in hardware. Also unix now
runs very nicely on intel platforms with better support as the admins do not
have to rely so much on what the vendor claims as what they know to be true.
UNIX pays back for those serious about Internet Security in spades due to
better scalability, managebility, robustness, and literal terabytes of
excellent free source code that can be used to extend the power of the
wall infinately. After all the entire concept of *NIX was to allow for
infinite extendibility and customization. Have you observed linux lately???
Never ceases to amaze me that the level of expertise that exists low level
on the *NIX world is by far the norm. Whereas in the nt world the question
is what program do i download and execute that protects me from whatever...
It will be a very sad day for security when none scutinized code is
accepted for being |MORE||less > than code that is freely analysed. Also
the lessons learned from running unix can be applied granularly to nt to
a great extent as most if not all Internet services are knock offs of UNIX
solutions that have been around for some time. Having said all that if
you simply want to feel secure without really knowing if you are then by
all means use nt. But if you wish to know more precisely and are taking
security as being very serious issue you should consider *NIX as the
proper way to go. Ever wonder why time after time on this list && others
that the same response is made??? Perhaps a better idea is if you have
some space on one of your boxes @ home is to add linux of freebsd and
dig deep as the answer is there for those who know that ...
"the truth is out there...;'))"
Good luck and let us know what u decide
                            to go with and why???
                                                        Happy Firewalling!

Reuters, London, February 29, 1998:
Scientists have announced discovering a meteorite which will strike the
earth in March, 2028. Millions of UNIX coders expressed relief for being
spared the UNIX epoch "crisis" of 2038.
