I don't want to sound like I am questioning your manhood or anything Sean,
but that statement is pretty naive don't you think. If that were the case,
why employ guards at all?
We keep getting back to the old due diligence issue. Of course the
available budget always erodes what you can employ. The thought that the
only thing these products can do is to do string searches for words like
"classified" etc does not do justice to what they are capable of. Also, to
say you will only catch the stupid user is likewise unwise. Perfectly good
employees, who have been properly trained, still will use email to pass
inappropriate data if they have a deadline to meet, or whatever. They will
do it if it saves them effort or time.
There are also legal issues, for example, a company can be held liable if an
employee uses his company computer to pass pornography, or sexually harasses
another employee via email. It doesn't matter if that employee was
following the "Rules" or claims to have not received proper training etc.
Recent court cases have shown the only way to demonstrate due diligence, is
to employ some type of formal review process in place. Not a once in a
while thing either. It must be ongoing and documented. Otherwise, get out
the check book when the law dogs come sniffing at your door. The employment
of one of these tools goes a long way to satisfy the requirement.
