G'day folks,
Recently, I posted a query about software to "proxy" NNTP so we could limit
access to specific newsgroups without having to run a news server locally (as
our read:subscriber ratio is quite low).
Here (briefly) are the suggestions I received:
1. DNEWS news-server - we want to avoid a server, but this may be useful
to sites who don't want the hassle of trying to set up INN.
2. nntpcache - freeware/shareware server intended for Linux (but with
source available, shouldn't be too difficult to get working on
other UNIXen)
3. The Raptor firewall (Axent Technology) includes an NNTP proxy which
provides full user-access controls.
4. There's a NNTP proxy called dnntpd that allows you to group together one
or more real news servers into a single "virtual" news server that
appears to the clients to be carrying the aggregate newsgroups among
all the real servers (UNIX open source only, find it at
ftp://ftp.cs.cmu.edu/misc/dnntpd/).
Given our situation, I'm currently leaning toward either nntpcache or dnntpd,
but no decisions have been made yet.
I am interested in people's thoughts/experiences on the Raptor firewall
(please, no commercial responses), particularly on a UNIX platform (I'm
showing my bias again).
My thanks to the following who responded (my apologies if I've left your
name off the list):
Philipp G. Schenkl, Graham Wheeler
Jesse G. Brown, Dawn

Mike Batchelor, Stu Pidaso
Ciao.
