This could simply be the winpopup service which is accessible using 
NetBIOS. I think that this service is enabled by default on Win '95 machines,
but has to be explicitly enabled on NT. Not sure about '98. 

If that is the case, it isn't anything as serious as Back Orifice. Such
messages can be sent using a SAMBA client, amongst other programs.
