I've used and installed both Raptor and Sidewinder firewalls and for all
practical purposes they're functionally the same, both being proxy based
firewalls. While some will differ I prefer Sidewinder over Raptor because of
the GUI, the security background of Secure Computing and to a lesser degree
strikeback.
When compared to other firewalls on the market you have to take in
consideration which is better, a proxy-based firewall or a packet
filtering/stateful inspection firewall. I personally believe that proxy
based firewalls are more secure on some protocols, ones that have built-in
proxies or daemons, that packet filter firewalls. The built-in proxies and
daemons are designed to only perform certain functions within the protocol
something packet filter types cannot do. However this functionality can
increase packet transit time up to 20msec depending on the firewall
hardware, O/S, protocol, etc. If you require speed more than security I
would recommend a packet-filter type of firewall which has negligible
delays. A couple of years ago I evaluated Sidewinder against Checkpoint 3.0
and the transit time for a 10 Meg ftp transfer was 15% greater on Sidewinder
than Checkpoint using the same platform. When choosing any firewall the
following factors should be taken in consideration, security, performance,
compatibly(IPSEC), administration, cost and before choosing or installing
any firewall a traffic baseline should be done.
