I just went away for the weekend and took "Building Internet Firewalls" with
me (not recommended - DNS nightmares are...strange).
It's a pretty good book. It's not rocket science, but it lays down the
basics really clearly, and has a nice "by service" approach. I think it is a
good one to have around if you get brain fade and can't remember what ports
NNTP uses or whatever. At the price, I'd say buy it.
Haven't read your other title, but the old "TCP/IP Illustrated" Berkely book
(volumes 1 and 2 if you're keen) goes into psychotic amounts of detail about
TCP/IP from the ground up. Very fine book, but more likely to be a
background filler than a use every day thing.
Personally I think the stuff you want as desk reference material is "just
the data" stuff like assigned port numbers, TCP/UDP header diagrams,
protocol maps etc. I've got a heap more info from mailing lists and security
/ 'l33t h4X0R d00dZ websites than textbooks, but when you need a number or a
bit offset it is a pain to go hunting through the web.
Cheers!

What books would you guys suggest for references/"bibles" on
computer security; specifically firewall security. I own a lot of security
books, but the two most appropriate to the topic at hand are: Building
Internet Firewalls (Chapman, Zwickey) and Cisco TCP/IP (Lewis). Has anyone
had any experience with these books? What books do you think are worth
reading/buying and WHY?
I hope this message can turn into a forum for discussion of security
books in general.
Thanks in advance for the feedback.
