You're right, but this has absolutely nothing to do with outbound SSL
access through a firewall. This is about "reverse" proxying INBOUND web
connections that are encrypted with SSL, with the proxy server masquerading
as the real web server.

I've yet to see an application layer gateway for SSL, everything I've
seen tunnels it out over a TCP plug.

That's one reason I've been fighting allowing SSL to my users for the
last several years.
